Do…or do not. There is no try." YODA, from Star Wars *********************************** REFORECASTING YOUR GOALS For the last few years, in addition to speaking and writing, I have been working at a commercial real estate firm outside of Washington DC, specializing in the area of property management. One of my primary tasks each year around this time is to prepare annual operating budgets for each of the six buildings I help manage. In addition, my job requires me to reforecast, or re-project, the income and expenses anticipated for the remainder of the year. Many times, if a building’s income and expenses are right on track, then reforecasting is easy. The numbers stay relatively the same for the rest of the year. However, sometimes, unforeseen expenses crop up that can throw a budget way off track. This requires making some re-projections about results expected at Year End. In the same way, many of us make plans for the future. We project what our life will be like in the near or distant future by setting goals and "forecasting" what our future will look like as a result of achieving those goals. If we’re really smart, we create a list of action items that will help us reach those goals as quickly and efficiently as possible. Sometimes though, circumstances beyond our control throw us slightly (or even drastically) off course! For example, a plan to lose weight may go awry after attending one holiday party after another and being exposed to all sorts of culinary temptations! Another example is promising yourself that you will get out of debt by reducing "unnecessary expenditures" only to find yourself lured by "Annual" "Semi-Annual" or "After Holiday" sales. Those are just a couple of examples of how a good plan can go bad quickly! YOUR "HALFTIME STRATEGY" Pretend that it is half-time in a game called "Goals 2005." You’re in the locker room cooling down from the first half of what has been an incredible and eventful year so far, with its share of ups and downs. You may have made excellent progress toward you goals, but you are not quite at the "finish line." Take a few moments and ponder the following questions. Jot down your answers in a notebook or journal. This exercise will assist you in developing an action plan for the "second half" of this year. * WHAT ONE THING HAVE YOU DONE CONSISTENTLY WELL IN THE FIRST HALF OF 2005 THAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS SO FAR? * THINK OF AT LEAST ONE MOMENT DURING THE LAST SIX MONTHS WHEN YOU EXPERIENCED PURE JOY OR DEEP SATISFACTION. WHAT CAUSED THIS FEELING? WHAT CAN YOU DO TO EXPERIENCE MORE MOMENTS LIKE THAT? * WHAT ONE THING HAS BEEN HOLDING YOU BACK OR MAKING YOU FEEL "STUCK?" * WHAT ONE CHANGE CAN YOU MAKE IN YOUR LIFE TO GET YOURSELF "UNSTUCK?" * WHAT STEPS WILL YOU NEED TO TAKE IN THE SECOND HALF OF 2005 TO ENSURE THAT YOU REACH YOUR GOALS? * HOW WILL YOU HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE? *********************************** "Goals get you started on the road to your dream; no matter how impossible things may seem. Hope gives you courage and power to know; your destiny calls, so GET UP AND GO!" – Peter Colwell *********************************** CLOSING THOUGHTS Make the second half of 2005 even better than the first! Go after your goals with guts and gusto! Develop a "halftime strategy" that will set you up for success in the months to come. Let me leave you with the encouraging words of the late poet Douglas Malloch: "If you can’t be a pine on the top of the hill, Be a scrub in the valley – but be The best little scrub by the side of the rill; Be a bush if you can’t be a tree. "If you can’t be a bush, be a bit of the grass, And some highway happier make; If you can’t be a muskie, then just be a bass— But the liveliest bass in the lake! "We can’t all be captains, we’ve got to be crew, There’s something for all of us here. There’s big work to do and there’s lesser to do And the task we must do is the near. "If you can’t be a highway, then just be a trail, If you can’t be the sun, be a star; It isn’t by size that you win or you fail— Be the best of whatever you are!"
