QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

"The successful person must make his own opportunity as oft
as find it."
Francis Bacon

***********************************

Sometimes, life will bombard you with a series of setbacks
– these setbacks may take the form of a pink slip on your
desk at work, a rejection letter from a prospective
employer, a voice mail from a girl/boyfriend explaining why
"something has suddenly come up," or a business ledger with
more minuses than pluses.

Whatever the setbacks, and no matter the number that you
face, there is always a way around them. When there seems
to be no opportunity for your dream to come to fruition,
your best chance for success may be to "design your own
'window' of opportunity." This means taking a proactive
stance in making your dreams come alive, and developing a
"whatever-it-takes" attitude about achieving your goals.

MAKE YOUR OWN OPPORTUNITIES

In my quest to become a published author, I faced a number
of hurdles, including being turned down by twenty-six
(that’s right, 26!) publishers, many of them big-name, New
York houses. As you can imagine, this news was less than
encouraging. In fact, for a brief moment, I wondered if I
should just take the rejection as a sign that I was not cut
out as a writer, and to give up on my dream of being a
published writer.

Fortunately, though, I was able to adjust my attitude, and
recognize not only that my message did have high value, but
that there had to be another way to reach my goal.

Enter the world of self-publishing: a phenomenon I was only
vaguely familiar with at the time. I was willing to find
out more about this area to see if this approach would be a
viable solution for me. After hours and hours of research
into the field of self-publishing, I realized this was not
only a viable solution, but the optimal solution for
realizing my dream.

Within four months of making the decision to self-publish,
I formed my own small publishing company, attended
intensive training sessions to learn the business of
publishing, and networked with experts in the field to give
me a jumpstart in the right direction. Ten months later, my
first book -- Spell SUCCESS in Your Life -- was published.
It is now enjoying publication in six languages!

How does my publishing success story relate to you and your
dreams? There will be many hurdles you will face when you
dare to pursue your dreams. These hurdles may come in the
form of naysayers and critics who undermine your efforts,
or self-doubt and fear triggered by your "inner critic."

When you decide to design your own window of opportunity,
you actively and consciously take control of your attitude.
Active and conscious decisions will determine your ultimate
outcomes.

BEWARE OF THE NAYSAYERS

Along the road to your dreams, beware of the naysayers who
try to hold you back and prevent you from taking action to
make your dreams a reality. These people will try anything
to talk you out of your dreams.

When I shared my publishing plans with a career advisor,
she looked me stone-cold in the face, and told me without
hesitation that it wouldn’t happen. She said, "That’s not
going to work." "What’s not going to work?" I asked. "Your
book – it’s not going to be published." My gut was
twisting. Heartburn was setting in. "And why do you say
that?" I gasped. You see, this woman had dreamed of opening
an art gallery. She had big plans for this gallery.
Everything was in place, until one of the investors decided
he didn’t like art galleries, and refused to fund the
project.

In a vain attempt to convince me further, she told me the
story of her son’s failed adventures as a photojournalist.
Despite the backing of well-connected people, his career
fell short. These were the reasons why I would fail??

Since they had failed in their attempts, she assumed I
would meet the same fate. I could have allowed her comments
to discourage me, but instead I let that experience
motivate me to follow my dream with even more intensity and
purpose!

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Remember, there is more than one way to reach your goals –
it’s up to you to find, or create, the resources necessary
to manifest your deepest desires. If you are experiencing
frustration in one particular area of your life, decide now
to take control of it by implementing the following three
steps.

• Visualize clearly what you want to achieve.
• Try several methods/approaches until you reach your goal.
• Let people's negative comments propel you toward success.

See you next month!
