GOOD NEWS!
***********************************

The last two months have been exceptionally exciting for me
and my family! My wife Trevia and I welcomed a baby girl -
Vanessa Christian Colwell (8 lbs., 2 oz.) - into the world
on September 5, 2007. And just last week, the Boston Red
Sox won Major League Baseball's World Series for the second
time in three years. Being a native Bostonian and a
life-long Red Sox fan, this victory was special for me and
my family! Now, if the New England Patriots can keep up
their winning streak, we'll really be on a roll...!

THOUGHT TO PONDER
***********************************

"Man has never made any material as resilient as the human
spirit."
- Bernard Williams (1929- ) English Philosopher

***********************************

In this modern age of fast-paced living and instant access
to information, we often get bombarded with messages and
demands that put a strain on our resources and a drain on
our energy. After all, we can only be in so many places at
once. And we can only focus effectively on one project at a
time. Running long and running hard eventually can take a
toll on our spirit, and leave us wondering "Is there more
to life than this?" or "When did I stop having fun?"

Sometimes, we need to regroup, reassess, and recharge so we
can face challenges with a fresh perspective and a renewed
sense of purpose.

Here are five ways to "Energize Your Spirit":

1) Break Through Inertia

One of the best ways to get energized is to begin putting
your ideas into action. This may mean implementing goals
and plans you have been procrastinating about for a while.
Maybe you have been pulled in several directions and have
not had (or made) the time to focus on something you’ve
really been wanting to do.

Taking the first step – no matter how small – can be very
rewarding and can give you the boost you need to keep the
momentum going. When I began writing my first book, after
thinking about it for several months, the critical moment
was when I sat down at the computer and began "putting
fingers to keyboard." A few lines turned into a few pages
pretty quickly, and the ball began to roll... no looking
back!

Decide today to take the first step to begin moving toward
an important goal. This could be a turning point for you!

"Nothing happens until something moves." – Albert Einstein

2) Do Something for Somebody Else

If you want a sure-fire way to feel good about yourself and
put your problems in perspective, make it a point to do
something to help somebody else, no matter how small the
deed. Extending yourself to another person will make
someone else’s day and improve your outlook on life.

Here is a great poem that captures this idea:

"How to Be Happy" – Author Unknown

Are you almost disgusted with life, little man?
I’ll tell you a wonderful trick
that will bring you contentment if anything can,
Do something for somebody, quick!

Are you awfully tired with play, little girl?
Wearied, discouraged, and sick?
I’ll tell you the loveliest game in the world,
Do something for somebody, quick!

Though it rains like the rain of the flood, little man
And the clouds are forbidding and thick,
You can make the sun shine in your soul, little man
Do something for somebody, quick!

Though the stars are like brass overhead, little girl,
And the walks like a well-heated brick
And our earthly affairs in a terrible whirl,
Do something for somebody, quick!

3) Take Care of Your Health

Like the old Arabian proverb says: "He who has health has
hope; and he who has hope, has everything." Make it a point
to take care of your mental, emotional, and physical
health. This year, I made health a top priority and as a
result, underwent nasal surgery to repair a deviated septum
and to remove two large polyps that were obstructing my
breathing.

I can now breathe so much better and my senses of smell and
taste have improved dramatically. The decision to put my
health first led me to see a specialist who detected this
problem. This improvement has made a world of difference
in my quality of life!

What area of your health might need a check-up? Listen to
your body and be good to yourself. There’s only one you and
we only have one life to live. Strive for good health!

4) Rekindle Your Passion

One excellent way to energize your spirit is to reconnect
with those things that make you feel good. Make it a point
to start doing those activities that bring you joy, peace,
satisfaction, or a sense of adventure.

Some of my passions include reading (on average 2 books a
week), running, writing, public speaking, speechwriting,
coaching and mentoring others. Doing any of those
activities brings me tremendous joy and elevates my mood
and spirit. Any time I start to feel withdrawn, it’s
usually because I have strayed away from doing those things
I am passionate about.

This past year, I have reconnected with my passion of
public speaking and writing by preparing new speeches and
working on a new book. I am also coaching aspiring speakers
and writers with their speeches and book projects. Helping
other people grow and develop themselves brings the most
satisfaction of all!

What are you passionate about? What can you do today to
begin rekindling your passion? Think about it - and TAKE
ACTION!

"I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day,
a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic
waiting somewhere behind the morning."
- J.B. Priestly (1894-1984) English Author

5) Renew Your Sense of Purpose

As we move along in life, we often discover that our goals
and objectives of ten years ago are no longer relevant
today. Maybe you’ve reached a goal that was your singular
objective at one time. Or maybe you find yourself in a
completely new environment with a brand new life. If this
is the case, it may be time to assess where you are now,
what you would like to accomplish at this point in your
life, and what NOW gives you the greatest sense of meaning
and satisfaction.

Victor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning,
discusses the importance of finding meaning and purpose in
our lives, no matter what we are going through. In his
famous volume, he writes "To be sure, man’s search for
meaning may arouse inner tension rather than inner
equilibrium. However, precisely such tension is an
indispensable prerequisite of mental health. There is
nothing in the world, I venture to say, that would so
effectively help one to survive even the worst conditions
as the knowledge that there is a meaning in one’s life."

Take inventory of your wants and needs, likes and dislikes,
goals and dreams. Remember that your life begins anew each
day! Take some time to discover – or rediscover -your
purpose!

"What matters is not the meaning of life in general but
rather the specific meaning of a person’s life at a given
moment."
- VICTOR FRANKL

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Remember: It only takes a spark to get a fire going!
Energize your mind and spirit today by taking positive
action toward your goals, helping other people, and living
with passion and purpose! Your health depends upon it!
