THOUGHT TO PONDER

"Thorough preparation makes its own luck." – Joe Poyer

Have you ever wondered if there is a real connection
between success and luck? Many people attribute the success
of other people to "being in the right place at the right
time" or "knowing the right people" or "just being plain
lucky." While it is true that many successful people credit
luck as one of their reasons for doing so well, it is
important to realize that luck is something that can be
created and nurtured in our own lives, regardless of our
past circumstances or any negative conditioning we may have
received.

In his book "The Luck Factor," Dr. Richard Wiseman reveals
the results of extensive interviews and experiments with
hundreds of volunteers over a three-year period. His
studies led him to four principles for bringing about good
luck in your life. According to Wiseman, lucky people have
the following traits in common. Luck people:

1) Maximize their chance opportunities
2) Boost their intuition by listening to their gut
feelings
3) Expect good fortune
4) Transform bad luck into good fortune

CHANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Meeting my wife was a chance opportunity like no other. We
met back in 1998 through a local radio dating service (this
was before the days of E-Harmony and other internet dating
websites). A computer matched us up based on the perceived
compatibility of our personalities, characteristics, and
interests. We met on a blind date and within seven months,
we got engaged! Ten years later, we are happily married
with two beautiful children!

INTUITION

The best way to know if you are making a good decision is
to listen to your inner voice, or lucky hunch, for answers.
This can best be accomplished by clearing your mind and
reflecting in silence. Sometimes, all we have to do is
follow our gut feeling to make the right decision. My "gut"
told me to quit a job several years back on the spot (with
no back-up plan). Doing so saved my health and within a
week I landed a job that has turned into a rewarding and
fulfilling career.

EXPECT GOOD FORTUNE

Henry Ford is famous for saying, "If you think you can or
you think you can’t, you’re probably right." We must
elevate our expectations for the future if we want to
achieve our goals and live our dreams. When I fired my
literary agent years ago to pursue self-publishing my book
– a risky move indeed – I told him that "I hope to follow
in the footsteps of Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, and Virginia
Woolf, all of whom self-published their works." My
expectations led to an initial print run in America and
publication in several foreign languages!

TURNING BAD LUCK INTO GOOD FORTUNE

The best way to handle "bad luck" is to minimize its effect
on you by focusing on the positive aspects of your
situation and being thankful for what you have (versus what
you have lost or what has been taken away). By refusing to
dwell on the negatives, and choosing to focus on the
positives, you will gain strength and courage to persevere
through a temporary setback, realizing the timeless wisdom
that "this too shall pass."

"The luck of having talent is not enough; one must also
have a talent for luck."
– Hector Berlioz

In order to manifest our dreams into reality, we must
recognize those "chance opportunities" that come along and
make the most of them. We must make it a habit to listen to
our intuition for guidance and direction. Finally we must
EXPECT good things to come our way, and turn negatives into
positives through the power of our attitudes.

Here are some techniques for manifesting your dreams and
desires...

1) Act as if you are already living your dream.

Imagine what your life would be like if you were already
living your dream. Where would you live? What would your
daily routine be? Where would you go shopping or dining?
Whom would you associate with? What would your bank account
look like? What would your leisure time look like? Create a
vivid mental picture of what your dream looks and feels
like. See it as a real possibility for yourself!

2) Etch your dream in stone (or at least paper!).

Writing down your goals and your big vision helps to
solidify your ideas and etch them into your subconscious
mind. Being able to view your goals in "black and white"
and review them from time to time reinforces your
commitment to this vision. The mere act of writing the
vision gives you a giant leap forward in the direction of
making it a reality.

3) Announce your dream as a "forthcoming reality."

One technique that has worked well for me is to announce my
dream as a forthcoming reality. For example, when I first
started my speaking career, I promoted myself as the author
of the forthcoming book Spell SUCCESS in Your Life, even
though the "book" consisted of a skeleton outline, most of
which was still in my head. Announcing my goal to others
gave me a great incentive to move forward with the project,
and helped me to hold myself accountable for achieving it.

4) Visualize your dreams by speaking of the future in the
present tense.

One effective tool to manifesting your dream(s) is to
create a vision statement, projecting a year or so into the
future and speaking (or writing) in the present tense. For
example, you would write "Today is (one year from the day
you are writing this)." I am _______________. My life is
____________. My greatest personal achievement this past
year was ____________. My greatest professional achievement
this past year was _____________. I am most proud of
_________________.

These are just a few examples of the vision you can create
by visualizing yourself in the future and painting a vivid
picture.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Remember: You can manifest your deepest desires by
maximizing your opportunities and having positive
expectations about your future, regardless of your present
circumstances. Visualize, Actualize, then Realize!
