"SPELL SUCCESS" E-ZINE -- CHALLENGE YOURSELF
Spell SUCCESS E-Zine, © 2004, Motivational Magic by Peter Colwell ISSUE 5 Welcome to the "Spell SUCCESS" e-newsletter, a primer on personal and business success topics. Thank you for being a subscriber and reader. Please feel free to forward this newsletter to family, friends, and colleagues who are interested in personal development. *********************************** QUOTE OF THE MONTH: “Experience shows that success is due less to ability than to zeal. The winner is he who gives himself to his work – body and soul.” CHARLES BUXTON *********************************** ARE YOU CHALLENGING YOURSELF? Last week, I began an 84-day weight training program called Body-for-Life. This physical and nutritional plan, created by best-selling author and physical trainer Bill Phillips, is designed to transform your physique through resistance training, high-intensity aerobic workouts, and a regimen of six nutritious meals a day, instead of the “three square meals” most people are accustomed to. This program poses a challenge to me on many fronts: the challenge of disciplining myself to do the workouts (6 days a week), the challenge of making the time to prepare in advance my meals and my workout schedule, and – the biggie – the challenge of eating the right foods; a daily combination of proteins, carbohydrates, and vegetables. In the American Heritage Dictionary, the word CHALLENGE is defined as “the quality of requiring full use of one’s abilities, energy, or resources.” I believe we need challenges in our lives to motivate us to reach whatever “finish line” we are pursuing: educational degrees, promotions, career advancement, and a variety of personal and professional milestones. What happens when you no longer feel challenged in your job, for example? You start to go through the motions. After a while, you may begin to lose the enthusiasm you once had toward your job. This lack of enthusiasm can translate into diminished productivity and effectiveness. It can also dampen the enthusiasm of others who may be affected by your attitude toward your work. Og Mandino, author of The Greatest Salesman in the World, says that we all have unlimited potential; that we only use a small portion of our brain, and that we only flex a paltry amount of our muscles. Mandino asserts that we can increase our accomplishments of yesterday a hundredfold or more, if we simply make up our minds to do so. This month, I want to throw down a challenge to you. I challenge you to make a commitment to dramatically improve one area of your life that desperately needs your attention. Maybe your personal fitness needs to be attended to. Or perhaps you need to organize your time better to make room for more fun and entertainment. Could be that you need to reacquaint yourself with family and friends. In order to do make these positive changes, you may need to first: CHALLENGE LIMITING BELIEFS AND OLD SELF-CONCEPTS Don’t allow yourself to be held back from making progress in your life by making excuses (however plausible they may seem) to justify inaction. Examples of such excuses may include: • “I’m too old.” • “I’m too young.” • “I’m not qualified.” • “I don’t have enough time.” • “I’ve never done that before.” • “I’d make a fool of myself.” • “I’d probably fail.” To fight off inertia and gain the motivation to jumpstart your life, try one of these antidotes” • “It’s never too late.” • “I’m eager to learn.” • “I have what it takes.” • “My time will come.” • “I will make time.” • “I love challenges.” • “Who cares about what others think?” • “It’s worth taking a chance on.” CLOSING THOUGHTS So remember that challenge lends excitement to life, and enthusiasm about your goals is the real secret to successfully following through on your plans. I’ll leave you with the wise words of Charles Schwab: “A person can succeed at almost anything for which he has unlimited enthusiasm.” GO FOR IT! See you next month!
