PROSPER THROUGH POSITIVE CHOICES

Whether we realize it or not, we are always making choices
(consciously or subconsciously) – choices that affect
virtually every aspect of our lives: the quality of our
relationships, our physical health, our emotional well
being, and even our financial stability.

What do all of the following have in common?

SUCCESS
FAILURE
PROSPERITY
POVERTY
HAPPINESS
DESPAIR

These experiences are all the result of our CHOICES.

What choices are you making about what to fill your mind
and experiences with? Are you choosing to dwell in
prosperity, or do you find yourself in a life that is
consistently lacking what you truly desire? Are you
choosing to be happy and find goodness in others and
yourself, or do you constantly remind yourself of what is
wrong with the world and the people in it?

Every circumstance we find ourselves in, whether positive
or negative, is a result of a choice we made at one point
on our lives. If you want to change your circumstances, you
must choose to do things differently. You must choose to
change your behavior, patterns of thinking, and
perspective. In short, you must develop a flexible
attitude.

Many things in life remain out of our control, such as
weather patterns, the actions of other people, or
unexpected political and social events. Despite the
relative uncertainty of life, and our inability to control
certain outcomes, one comforting thought is that we all
have control over the one thing that matters the most – our
attitudes!

Just today, I witnessed the power of a positive attitude in
seemingly dire circumstances. I called my bother-in-law to
wish him a happy birthday. However, my sister had answered
the phone and before I could share my birthday greetings,
she informed me that their house had been flooded and had
sustained considerable damage. A crew of restoration
specialists was sorting through the damage while my sister
recounted the events of the day.

But instead of dwelling on the negatives, her voice
expressed thankfulness and relief. Thankfulness that she
was home when the "waterfalls" began, and relief that they
had flood insurance, and only had to pay a deductible. She
also expressed appreciation at the professional job being
performed by the clean-up crew.

One simple shift in our focus can change our outlook
completely. Susan clearly chose to find what was GOOD about
the situation, preferring to be thankful and appreciative.
She even reminded me how beautiful their garden plants were
growing. Now there’s an example to follow!

RENEW YOUR RESOLVE

As the second half of 2004 begins, now is a great time to
think about the level of commitment you are making toward
your personal and professional growth. What goals have you
set for yourself this year? What progress have you made so
far? What setbacks, if any, have you encountered?

My major definite purpose of 2004 has been (and still is)
to dramatically improve my physical health – through weight
loss, improved nutrition, and increased strength and
endurance. I started out by creating a "purpose statement"
and letting the steps take care of themselves.

In February, I began training for the Baltimore Marathon,
thereby committing myself to eight solid months of
endurance training. In May, I began a 12-week weight
training program to supplement the running workouts. As a
result, I have lost 38 pounds and dropped a few waist
sizes. The downside: having to buy a new wardrobe. The
upside: improved health and increased confidence in my
ability to follow through on worthwhile goals (and I’m sure
my doctor will be pleased during my next visit!).

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Decide now to commit (or re-commit) to achieving a goal
that will make a positive difference in your wealth,
health, or well-being. Do it now. Make no excuses. As
George Eliot once said, "It’s never too late to be what you
might have been."

See you next month!
